About the station
Named after Turkestan — the historical name of a vast region of Central Asia. One wall depicts landmarks of neighbouring countries, the other historic cities and regions of Uzbekistan. A groundwater breakthrough halted its construction for years; work resumed in 2016.
The name
«Turkiston» is the Uzbek name for Turkestan. In the 19th and early 20th centuries this name was used for a vast historical region of Central Asia.
Design
Two rows of columns faced with white marble stand on the platform. One wall shows landmarks of Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Turkmenistan, the other Bukhara, Samarkand, Khorezm and other regions of Uzbekistan. There are also mosaics of historic mausoleums and shrines of Tashkent and the Fergana region.
History
Work on the northern extension of the line had been halted because of groundwater leaks. It resumed under a decree of 7 November 2016, and the water-bearing layer was crossed using reinforced-concrete tubbing and German technology. The station was built by bridge builders of the Koʻprikqurilish trust of Uzbekistan Railways and opened on 29 August 2020 as the northern terminus of the Yunusobod line.
Fun fact
The 2.9 km extension of the line with two stations, Yunusobod and Turkiston, cost 103.8 million dollars.
