About the station
Named after the composer and folklorist Yunus Rajabiy. It is the deepest station of the Tashkent metro — about 24 m underground, with ceilings over 7 m high. Oriental-style columns are topped with capitals that double as lamps; a passage leads to Amir Temur xiyoboni.
The name
The station bears the name of Yunus Rajabiy (1897–1976), a composer, singer and folklorist. He recorded more than one and a half thousand folk songs and tunes that had until then been passed down only orally. In the design stage the station was called «Pervomayskaya».
Design
It is a deep-level, three-vault column station with ceilings over 7 m high. Its oriental-style marble columns are topped with capitals that also serve as lamps.
History
Construction was hampered by the great depth and high groundwater: 19 vertical drainage wells were drilled to remove the water. The station opened on 26 October 2001. Two passages lead to Amir Temur xiyoboni on the Chilonzor line: one through the lobby and a tunnel starting right on the platform.
Fun fact
It is the deepest station of the Tashkent metro, 24 m below ground.
